Rock Cottage is a rural luxury thatched holiday cottage in North Devon in the quite countryside village of Goodleigh. This is an idyllic country cottage in a quiet location with peaceful surroundings and is furnished and equipped to the highest specifications.
All the work surfaces are natural slate, which not only provides an excellent, heat-resistant resting point for pots and pans but also complements the slate used elsewhere in the cottage (e.g. the original 17th century winding staircase, the hearth and the hall steps). The hob and self-cleaning grill/oven and main oven invite cooking of the simplest or most elaborate fashion, and there’s the microwave, too, for all levels of gastronomic skill. We now also have a new dishwasher. Modern down-lighting provides separate pools of light over work surfaces and the dining table.
The chunky, exposed wooden beams add a sense of permanence, timelessness and warmth to this most comfortable and relaxing of rooms. The room is traditionally furnished with classic wingback chairs and a Laura Ashley sofa complimenting the original wood-backed window seats. The Room extends out from a large inglenook fireplace with woodburner and the original bread oven towards the oriental cabinet which holds a new 32” widescreen HDTV with Freeview, DVD/ VCR and Hi-Fi with iPod/ headphone plug. There are boardgames and jig-saws for old and young, and a portable table for Scrabble or cards.
At the top of the renovated stone staircase which winds up and over the bread oven, the Main Bedroom has a full King Size bed with pocket-sprung mattress for a really good night’s sleep. There is a rattan vanity desk and mirror, full-height wardrobe with lower drawers as well as a chest of drawers for all your holiday clothes. The chest of drawers has its own fold-down writing desk/compartment, ideal for writing postcards or storing the laptop.
Freshly renovated with traditional stainless steel taps, mirror and accessories, the bathroom provides full-sized bath with optional shower facility, basin, handy storage shelves and WC. Its storage heater provides warmth and freshness throughout the year, whether you are returning from a dip in the sea or from an invigorating walk in the countryside. The over-bath airers and humidistat-controlled extractor fan help damp clothes to dry out at any time of day or night.
Two zip-and-link beds allow this bedroom to be used as a double or twin bedroom. The bed combination will be set up as a double or two singles in advance of your arrival to meet your requirements. A half-height wardrobe with built-in chest of drawers is perfect for everything but an overcoat, for which there are plenty of hooks in the hall. A matching vanity-desk with mirror and drawers gives extra options for writing, drawing or make-up, depending on age and inclination. The en-suite WC gives guests added independence.
Key features outside include secluded off-road parking for 2 cars.
The cottage garden has been cleverly crafted from the sheltering hillside into terraces giving views over the village and across the valley. To one side of the cottage are two terraces, the lower with all-weather dining table with chairs and twin parasols next to a raised flower bed with a small hill-path leading up to a separate decking area, which is ideal in the summer for a lazy afternoon catching the sun.
On the opposite side of the house is another terrace with arbour and garden chairs bordered by a flowerbed and an attractive rock garden: perfect in spring and autumn for watching the sunset over the thatch.
Rock Cottage welcomes active adults of more or less any age, younger families (whose children will enjoy activities such as picking blackberries, in season, from the hillside) and couples in search of a private break from the daily norm.
We are not equipped to accommodate hen or stag-parties, and we cannot accept bookings from anyone under 21 years of age.
Rock Cottage is set on the hillside of a quiet village, and offers both privacy and stunning views of the countryside.
The age and structure of the cottage makes it unsuitable for the less mobile.
